I'm sitting here taking a break from teasing my hair to take some awesome series pictures, instead of trying to "get somewhere" in the nowhere. in that I'm using my time to exact my vision to the best of my ability. I'm gettin' er done lol Thanks for throwing my fb post up there too, hopefully it's as amusing as it is true :) Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16434236825564453438noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6567908322012999511.post-13357146810746887622013-03-04T14:56:27.710-07:002013-03-04T14:56:27.710-07:00Hi John. I written and published novels, so I know some skills require a lot of practice and patience. I discovered your work via DeviantART. Given the topic of this blog, I hope you won't shut down your account but continue to share your incredible work (I am not being facetious here).

Social networks have their place. I now only use it to keep up with friends and visit, if I'm lucky, twice to three times a week for only ten minute spurts. I too allowed myself to whittle the hours away on my backside instead of focusing on my first passion, writing. I won't bore you with the details, but suffice it to say I did not accomplish have the things I planned. To top that all off I belonged to a guild in World of Warcraft (another time sink) that required a lot of time away from writing. I think there was another problem to my behavior, which was not as insidious as the amateurs crawling out of the woodwork to critique every nuance of my work. Instead, what I experience was resistance.

Resistance is what keeps you staring at the screen, allowing the myriad of voices to inject every conceivable detour possible. When I started writing, I suddenly felt inclined to clean, to get the filing done, to organize the finances, to wash the car, to check all the light fixtures, to wash laundry (my laundry basket never looked so empty), take out the trash, etc., etc., etc. It was as though my brain decided, "Hey, this project is going to take a lot of work and a long time, so before you get started here's a few things to get done first..." And so I would find myself pulled in this or that direction before I finally realized that I was sabotaging myself. Needless to say, it took a Herculean effort to keep my butt on the chair and get the books written. I won't say it isn't work, but soon I was engrossed in my projects and forgot the rest of the world. I imagine photography is no different.

Social media is just another distraction. I find myself doing the same thing with photography as I did with my first novel--finding everything else to do instead of picking up the camera and taking pictures. Part of it is that I am so new to photography and I am still trying to understand shutter and aperture priorities and how they relate to exposure, ISO "sweet spots" as Ben Long suggests to find, and my artistic preferences (I am leaning towards Boca). But I am hopeful and intend to apply the same discipline I had to learn with writing. I applaud you for moving beyond the barriers, be it self-made or not, to keep doing what you love. Considering the quality of your work, I would say you’re definitely headed in the right direction.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06553751433113175624noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6567908322012999511.post-3596496275047122052013-02-22T09:10:09.632-07:002013-02-22T09:10:09.632-07:00Great post John and you know I am on the same pag...Great post John and you know I am on the same page with you on this one!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17135265523148941971noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6567908322012999511.post-1060184390216735282013-02-19T10:13:46.970-07:002013-02-19T10:13:46.970-07:00Right on point, well expressed.Right on point, well expressed.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12118172907996178884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6567908322012999511.post-51797201455486392272013-02-18T11:12:00.059-07:002013-02-18T11:12:00.059-07:00Great blog post John. I do have a ton of sales generated from Facebook though, so I tend to think the same as you do.

Again, nice job.Matt Paynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04919529059048357865noreply@blogger.com
